Abstract

The overall objective of this research project is to evaluate, by means of two longitudinal studies, variables that impact the quality of life related to oral health in children and adolescents. Study 1: It will be held in the city of Piracicaba / SP and will evaluate the impact of a dental care program on the subjective perceptions and academic performance of children between 8 to 10 years. A convenience sample will be selected including at least 20% (n = 240) of children attended by the project "Always Smiling". The questionnaire of quality of life (Child Perceptions Questionnaire - CPQ8-10) will be applied before and four weeks after completion of curative treatment. Academic performance (AP) for the periods prior and subsequent to the end of dental treatment will be achieved in schools. Study 2: The study will be held in Juiz de Fora / MG, through the revaluation of students who participated in a epidemiological survey previously conducted in 2009, when adolescents were 12 years. The goal is to investigate the incidence of oral diseases in the sample and assess the longitudinal impact of socioeconomic and family environment on the quality of life and school performance of teenagers. Moreover, it is proposed to evaluate the psychometric properties of responsiveness to longitudinal studies of the questionnaires and CPQ8-10 and CPQ11-14.The sample will be representative of the population studied and composed by 515 adolescents aged 15 years, from public and private schools in the city. The data on oral conditions will be collected by clinical examinations and a questionnaire will be applied to adolescents to assess their quality of life (CPQ11-14), socioeconomic status and family environment. In addition, the academic performance of each participant will be obtained in the schools. Data analysis for the two studies will be performed by using descriptive statistics, nonparametric Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney and chi-square tests. In addition, univariate and multiple logistic regressions analysis will be performed to assess the level of association between variables. (AU)
