Abstract

The aim of this cohort study performed in preschool children will be, firstly, (1) to evaluate biological and socioeconomic risk factors to dental caries incidence in children. With regard to the biological aspects, the issue of caries activity in the beginning of the evaluation will be taking into account, differently of traditional studies which usually consider only caries experience (with no considering caries activity). Regarding the socioeconomic aspects, concepts related to social capital and religiosity will be also evaluated, since these factors have shown significant association with dental caries only in cross-sectional studies. Other aim (2) will be to assess if the impact of dental caries on the quality of life of children changes at the same intensity of the increment of new caries lesions. Initial examinations were performed by 15 examiners during the National Vaccination Day, in June 2010. 639 children aged 1 to 5 years were examined using the ICDAS to detect caries lesions and an additional criterion to assess the activity. Other variables related to each child and its neighborhood were recorded, as well as data related to religiosity and social capital of children's family. A questionnaire to evaluate the impact of oral conditions on the children's quality of life (ECOHIS) was also applied. The same children will be re-examined during April and August of 2012, in order to evaluate of the conditions related to dental caries. The questionnaire to assess the impact on the quality of life will be applied again, and appropriate statistical analysis will be performed to evaluate the proposed objectives.
