Abstract

Currently, there is not sufficient scientific evidence to determine the importance that each rehabilitated tooth has in the mastication of removable denture wearers. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact produced by alteration on occlusal support in mastication of removable denture wearers. The experimental design will be paired and the sample will formed of 20 volunteers, with complete edentulism in maxillar and Class I of Kennedy partial edentulism in mandible (33 to 34), with age of 40-65 years old. The volunteers will be conventionally rehabilitated with upper complete denture (CD) and lower removable partial denture (RPD) with all posterior artificial teeth until second molars. The volunteers will have a period of 60 days to adapt to new prostheses. The alteration of occlusal support will be made possible by selective removal of artificial teeth in lower RPD base, setting the following conditions: (1) presence of all posterior artificial teeth until second molars (positive control); (2) bilateral retirement of inferior second molar teeth; (3) additional and bilateral retirement of first molar teeth; (4) additional and bilateral retirement of artificial second premolar teeth; e (5) additional and bilateral retirement of artificial first premolar teeth (negative control). The impact of each condition on mastication will be evaluated through calculus of masticatory performance and efficiency, and selection and breakage functions, using the artificial test food Optocal sieving method. During the measurement of masticatory performance and efficiency, it will be obtained quality and quantity kinesiographic records of the masticatory movement pattern in frontal and sagittal planes. Finally, the masticatory ability will be examined through a Likert questionnaire. The data obtained will be subsequently submitted to exploratory analysis, and appropriate statistical tests will be applied. (AU)
