Abstract

During the aging process, there are physiological changes that result in voice, speech, and oral functions. The efficiency of these functions can suffer interference from dental conditions and the type of oral rehabilitation process carried out to the individual. The objective of this study is the electromyographic activity during mastication and swallowing in elderly patients undergoing procedures in oral rehabilitation by means of partial or complete dentures, removable or fixed implant-supported. We will analyze data collected from at least 30 people, of both genders, aged over 60 years, in good general health, or partial edentulous treated at Graduate Hospital and Postgraduate Course of Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry of Bauru, University of São Paulo (FOB-USP). These individuals were evaluated in the Speech Therapy Clinic of FOB-USP and presented oral rehabilitation prior to use of a denture or partial removable denture or partial denture, implant or bone-integrated implant denture-supporting. Excluded from the sample are individuals with dentofacial anomalies or malformations, history of neurological, psychiatric, cancer of head and neck, as well as smokers and users of drugs that interfere with the functions to be investigated. Electromyography was performed using a recording six channels of EMG System in Brazil, although the activity of the masseter muscles were recorded during chewing and swallowing foods of different consistencies. The data will be measured, analyzed, and presented in tables and graphs, using the parameters of mean, median, half-width, and standard deviation. To verify the correlations between variables will be used tests estatístiscos parametric and nonparametric. (AU)
