Jatropha curcas: production of seedlings and herbicide selectivity objecting the production of bioenergy

Abstract

Belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, Jatropha curcas L. is a plant with many attributes, multiple uses and considerable potential. Its use as raw material for the bio-fuel production has been discussed thoroughly and appraised, for assisting some of the basic premises of the National Program of Production and Use of Bio-fuel, how to present a favorable energy balance, an efficient use of the soil, the generation of jobs, the social inclusion and the quality of life. The present research project has as objectives to gather and characterize access to Jatropha curcas of various origins in a germplasm bank; evaluate the methods of cultivation of Jatropha curcas: tillage and production of seedlings in different containers and substrates; assess the tolerance of Jatropha curcas seedlings of different herbicides, in order to know active ingredients that can be recommended when the field of culture.
