Studies on pesticide resistance on thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and mites (Tetranychus urticae), in several crops, and host preference of these pests on ornamental plants in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

One of the factors that affect the production and commercialization of ornamental plants and other crops in the country is the attack of pests such as thrips (Thysanoptera) and mites especially of the family Tetranychidae. Chrysanthemum is one of the most important ornamental plants commercialized around the world, including Brazil. One of the most important thrips species in chrysanthemum (and other crops) in the State of São Paulo is Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). The two-spotted spider mite, T. urticae, is a key pest of several crops of economic importance in Brazil, including several ornamental plants. One of the problems faced by the growers has been the difficulty for the control of these pests through the use of pesticides. The biological disequilibrium caused by the elimination of natural enemies and the possible development of pesticide resistance in these pests are among the main reasons for the pest control problems. The quick development of pesticide resistance in many species of insects and mites has been one of the major drawbacks for the control of pests all over the world. The objectives of the projects are: 1) to study the pesticide resistance in thrips (F. occidentalis) and mites in several crops of economic importance; and 2) to evaluate the host preference of thrips and mites (phytophagous and predators) to the most important chrysanthemum cultivars used in the State of São Paulo. In the research on acaricide resistance in T. urticae, studies on the mechanisms of acaricide resistance (biochemical and molecular characterization) will be included. (AU)
