Abstract

This project aims to wastewater treatment systems through wetlands (Wetlands), which will consist of two systems, the first horizontal flow, whose main objective is to increase the removal efficiency of organic matter. For a better condition for study will be used three systems of beds composed of different substrates, the first, filled with pebbles, stones 3 and sand, the second filled with pebbles, expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) and ground and recycled sand. The effluent generated in this first system will be routed to a second stage of treatment which consists of a vertical flow system with recirculation, the objective of this scheme is to increase the efficiency of nitrogen removal. This will be used three beds composed of different substrates, the first, filled with pebbles and stones 1 and 3, the second with stone 3 and pebbles, and finally a third composed of stone 3, expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) recycled and ground and pebbles. With the joining of the two systems is intended to achieve a significant reduction in organic matter and nitrogen, since the carbonaceous matter present in sewage is degraded, mostly aerobically by microorganisms that are attached to the filter material and roots macrophytes and anaerobically by bacteria adhered to the substrate of the filter bed. As for nitrogen, according to Arias (2005) of vertical flow wetlands are efficient at producing well-nitrified effluent and with the addition of Schedule recirculation back to the effluent treatment process, where you will find favorable conditions (anoxic conditions) to reduce rate of total nitrogen.
