Dynamic modeling of constructed wetland for treatment of domestic wastewater in isolated communities

Abstract

Constructed wetland system (SAC) is an efficient method for the treatment of domestic wastewater in isolated communities. Since this is a dynamic system, the characteristics of the treated effluent vary greatly. Dynamic models would allow the evaluation of the behavior of the SAC over time. Objective: Evaluate the efficiency of a SAC for treating domestic wastewater in isolated communities and develop a model using the System Dynamics methodology to evaluate and simulate the behavior of constructed wetland components and their specific interrelationships over time. Material and methods: Will be done a SAC with three impermeable beds planted with different densities of macrophytes (0, 10 and 20 plants m-2). The behavior of this system will be evaluated in three stages with different organic matter application rates (50% effluent + 50% water; 75% effluent + 25% water; 100% effluent), each of the impermeable beds will receive a daily flow of 100 L, resulting in a hydraulic detention time of three days. The following parameters will be evaluated each bed: biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, redox potential, pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, electrical conductivity, total coliform, fecal coliform, temperature and flow. With the collected data will be checked the fit of conventional hydraulic models and, if necessary, will be proposed changes in these conventional models. Additionally, will be developed a dynamic model in the SIMILE software which will allow to simulate the behavior of the SAC over time. (AU)
