Abstract

Sepsis is the first cause of death in critically ill patients. Appropriate markers of infection to detect and guide treatment to nosocomial infections are not available yet. The investigation of new markers of infection is the aim of this project. For that, we have designed a prospective study in non-infected patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to evaluate the inflammatory/immune response of those patients, in the presence of nosocomial infection. In general, 30-40% of the patients admitted to an ICU develop nosocomial infection. Identification of new markers of infection will provide new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, a major health problem worldwide. (AU)
