Abstract

This project explores the existing genomic synteny among members of the tribe Andropogonae with the objective of finding homologs of sugarcane stress-related ESTs (HSSRGs) in maize, with emphasis on disease-resistance genes. These HSSRGs will then be used as molecular markers in segregating populations of maize in order to investigate the presence of linkage between them and disease resistance genes of Zea mays. Primers will be designed based on the sequence of HSSRGs and tested on maize inbred lines to see if they amplify homologous sites in this species. Selected amplified fragments will then be used as molecular markers in populations derived from the crossing of these inbred lines and which segregate for resistance to the foliar pathogens Puccinia sorghi, P. polysora, Colletotrichum graminicola and Esxerohilum turcicum.
