This research project aims to apply high performance computing in interdisciplinary problems involving scientific computing, environment/environmental sanitation, and information/communication. These are research areas of interest of the School of Technology - UNICAMP, where the research will be developed. Prom the fundamental and mathematical points of view, we intend to develop algorithms/softwares for solving numerical problems to be carried out in high performance systems composed by the most recent hardware technologies, i.e., multi-core processors and graphic processing units. Environmental problems such as environmental pollution and flooding/drought monitoring will be addressed by simulation and data mining. Furthermore, we also intend to investigate and simulate the information traffic in multimedia networks by using parallel computing. These research lines will be conducted by associated researchers that have expertise in the corresponding lines. Due to the high demand of processing, storage, and information exchanges, the investigations will be carried out in a high performance computing cluster which will be requested in this proposal. Initially, the cluster will be necessary for the current research project but it can clearly be used in future projects of the School of Technology that may need high performance computing. We also expect that this project can stimulate other initiatives within the School of Technology to interdisciplinary approaches in order to strengthen their research activities and its Master Graduate Program implemented in 2009.
