Evaluation of VEGF, VEGFR and matrix metalloproteinase-9 immunohistochemical expressions as potential prognostic indicators for canine cutaneous mast cell tumors

Abstract

Mast cell tumors are frequent neoplasms and usually regarded as potentially malignant, thus representing prognostic and therapeutic challenges for veterinarians. Several researches have been done in search for more precise biological behavior indicators for this tumor. Angiogenesis and extracellular matrix degradation are important steps to invasion of adjacent tissues and neoplastic dissemination. These phenomena contribute to malignancy and are regulated by many growth factors and proteolytic enzymes, currently under research. The objective of this study is to characterize the immunohistochemical expressions of the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and its receptor (VEGF and VEGFR), and of the Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in canine cutaneous mast cell tumors, in comparison to the histomorphological grading system and the clinical evolution of the cases. The mast cell tumors will be submitted to immunohistochemical analysis, followed by quantification of the reactions by computerized morphometry. The results will be compared to the histopathological grading and to the survival and/or time to recurrence for the validation of these markers as prognostic indicators for this neoplasm. (AU)
