Health conditions in women over 50: a population-based study in the municipality of Campinas-SP

Abstract

Women live longer than men and are more numerous among the elderly population. Therefore, women are more susceptible to chronic diseases commonly associated with aging. The prevalence of health problems increases significantly with age, leading to the rising costs of medical and social services. The years added to life should be characterized by good health and independence and not by poor health, incapacitation and dependency to perform daily living activities. Objectives: To identify health conditions in women over 50 years of age in the municipality of Campinas, SP. Subjects and methods: In the municipality of Campinas, 66 censorial sectors will be chosen by lot, using equiprobabilistic Simple Random Sampling (SRS), starting from a list provided by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Six hundred and fifty-seven (657) women over 50 years old who live in Campinas will be selected for an interview. A questionnaire will be applied face-to-face or by telephone and will be carried out by interviewers trained by CEMICAMP (Research Center for the Control of Maternal Infant Disease in Campinas). The interview will include questions that evaluate social and demographic conditions, functional capacity, self-perception of health, health habits and the presence of self-reported chronic disease. Data analysis: The prevalence of chronic diseases and health habits shall be described. The association between categorical variables shall be performed by using the Fisher's exact test or the chi-square test. For a comparison of the means, the Student's t test shall be used. To assess the factors associated with the presence of chronic diseases, logistic regression analysis will be performed. Statistical procedures will be performed by using the SAS software package (Statistical Analyses System), version 0.1. (AU)
