Abstract

Despite the vast richness of species, there is an inherent difficulty in obtaining good local inventories for the family Lycaenidae due to the rarity of most of its species, which results both in a slow increase of species richness inventories and in low representation in collections. There are no foreign and national collections with representation of all species expected for the remnants of Atlantic rainforest. Therefore, several collections need to be studied to have a precise idea of the species richness of the lycaenids found in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Our goal is to fill gaps (especially with systematic samplings) that are known to still exist on the fauna of many localities in Brazil. This project also aims at a better systematic and evolutive understanding of these butterflies, giving continuity to the studies that Drs Marcelo Duarte (MZUSP) and Robert K. Robbins (NMNH), in fruitful collaboration, have been developing with the butterfly family in question. It should be emphasized that the development of projects pursued with the lycaenids represents an important opportunity to create an interdisciplinary group in Brazil to broaden the knowledge about the neotropical species. Systematic revisions of groups with recognized difficulty of identification will be encouraged throughout this project with undergraduate and graduate students. (AU)
