Abstract

Tinnitus is a frequent sympton and it is linked to emotional disorders, whose treatment has still been a challenge. Acupuncture is a promissing proposal, but the studies proving its benefits towards tinnitus are few. Objective: Evaluate the changes of brain blood flow in patients with tinnitus and regular audiometry undergone to acupuncture treatment. Methods: Sixty patients with tinnitus and regular audiometry will be randomed to have fifteen acupuncture sessions, active or placebo, and will be undergone to SPECT with [99mTc]ECD scans before and after the acupuncture sessions. The clinical evaluation will be done by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), by Visual Analogical Scale (VAS), by Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Anxiety Scale. Twenty healthy controls will have the SPECT with [99mTc]ECD only once to standard the blood flow. Expected Results: (1) Blood flow increase in temporal lobe in patients with tinnitus when compared to control group. (2) Blood flow decrease in temporal lobe in the group that will have active acupuncture when compared to a placebo group. (3) Improvement of the disconfort caused by tinnitus, kept for six moths, in the THI and EVA scores in the group undergo to active acupuncture. (AU)
