Abstract

Timber originating from planted forests (forested), such as eucalyptus and pine, are replacing wood from native forests in various sectors of the timber industry. Many components made of wood depends on the sanding process to ensure the final finish. However these processes are rarely studied. In this project we will analyze the influence of the type, size and wear of the abrasive in sanding process of different species of wood in a horizontal sander. It will be sanded pieces by cutting parallel to the fibers using three abrasive wear conditions, two different species (Pinus elliottii and Eucalyptus grandis), 2 abrasive (aluminum oxide and silicon carbide), three different sandpaper grit, a speed and a specific cutting pressures. For each test will be performed 5 repetitions, totaling 180 trials. The influence of abrasive material (aluminum oxide, silicon carbide), the sandpaper grit, and the condition of the abrasive wear in cutting efforts and the quality of parts will be examined through the acquisition of output variables: force sanding, power sanding, roughness, vibration analysis, heating, acoustic emission and surface integrity analysis with microscope images and by scanning electron microscopy. The objectives are perfectly feasible because there will be additional expenses for the acquisition of permanent materials. All equipment and materials needed for the project are available. Financial resources will be needed just to buy sandpaper of different materials (Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Carbide) and for performing scanning electron microscopy. (AU)
