Abstract

Abrasive processes represent the main methods to obtain finish and quality in metal parts. As main characteristics of these processes are: relatively high power consumption, right consumables uses and, consequently, high associated environmental impact. However, typically, these processes are evaluated relating its productivity and production costs. In this project the main abrasive processes applied by the metalworking industry: grinding and sanding, will be evaluated at broader sustainability indicators. The goal is to analyze these processes through environmental, financial and social metrics. The evaluation will be guided by metrics located in two macro areas of study and application, the states of São Paulo - Brazil and California - USA. Thus, it is proposed a mapping of processes across the public and political particularities of those regions. The methodology for analysis is the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with inventories collected directly in the execution of application scenarios of the processes in the laboratory. Cylindrical grinding tests using high-performance conventional abrasive wheel and sanding tests using flap disc will be conducted to produce inventory data. Finally, actions will be proposed to improve the sustainability of abrasive processes and disseminate sustainable concepts in the abrasives industry and in the aforementioned local communities. (AU)
