Abstract

This project aims to study the paleoenvironmental evolution, the dynamics of sedimentation and subsurface water in a transitional area ecotone between the Cerrado and Mata Atlântica during the Quaternary. This ecotone is located atthe Ecological Station of Mogi-Guaçú (EEcMG), in the municipality of Mogi-Guaçú, district of Martin Prado Jr., (between 22º 10'S and 22º 18' S and 47º 08 'W and 47° 11' W) in the state of Sao Paulo. The paleoecological and paleoclimatic interpretations will be based on the identification of palynogical assemblages, fragments of charcoal and isotopic analysis. These studies will be done with five shallow profiles. The project also involves the characterization of facies and understanding of the dynamics and chemistry of subsurface waters in the ecotone and its interrelation with the river, the depositional environment and the forest. All results will be integrated in order to improve knowledge about the origin and evolution of the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, and the dynamics of the quaternary plains that sustain these ecosystems.
