Abstract

In this project we will investigate algorithms and hardware support techniques to enable the implementation of efficient virtual machines. Virtual machines are computer programs that emulate an interface for the execution of other programs, compiled for the interface being emulated. This technology is widely used in computers systems, being used to support the execution of high level programming languages, such as Java, as well as the implementation of hardware software co-designed microprocessors, such as the Transmeta Efficeon. The majority of the existing virtual machines in the literature relies on emulation techniques such as interpretation and dynamic binary translation. In fact, these techniques are often combined in the same virtual machine to speedup the emulation process. Given the importance of the emulation process on virtual machines, the goal of this project is to investigate algorithms and hardware support techniques to speedup the emulation process of virtual machines. The focus of the project will be on: hot code prediction and the formation and optimization of hot regions of code. (AU)
