Abstract

Investigates the existence of the University of São Paulo, from its beggining in 1934 until 1968, the year of its reform, based on documentary sources and through historiographical approach. Intends to inventory and analyze the traditions, myths and symbols of the components of the university colleges in order to verify the hypothesis that the "university spirit" which was enacted in its foundation, it would have been confronted by "other spirits". These "other spirits" would be sustained by academic and professionals mystical values, emotionally shared by groups such as "invented traditions". These traditions were opposed to a "new tradition" established in the decree of foundation (1934), which gave central importance to the Faculty of Philosophy and the aims and values associated with it.
