Abstract

The main goal of this application is to fund the acquisition of a 1.5-m robotic telescope to be installed at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) for use by the astronomical communities of Brazil (90% of the time) and Chile (10% of the time). The telescope will be used, at first light, with a 1O.5k x 1O.5k pixel CCD camera, delivering a-50 x 50 arcmin2 field of view with a scale of 0.27 arcsec/pixel. It will be dedicated to long-term projects, targets of opportunity and follow-up of LSST discoveries. Particular attention will be placed on the selection of a sample of type Ia supemovae, using a set of contiguous narrow-band filters, and the study of variable stars using broader band filters. This new facility will also complement the science goals of the Brazilian l-m robotic telescope IMPACTON, extending its planned search for asteroids to the whole of the Southem hemisphere. This project is being developed in a c10se collaboration among the University of São Paulo (IAGIUSP), Inslituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), Observatório Nacional (ON) and Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA). CTIO was chosen as the location for this robotic telescope because Brazil has access to two other telescopes on the same site, SOAR and Gemini; these three facilities will be highly complementary. The choice was also made in consideration of the infrastructure already available and the support from CTIO for operations and maintenance (on a cost recovery basis, see letter enc10sed from Dr. Chris Smith). If this proposal is approved and the robotic telescope is installed, its operation and maintenance will be assured by ON, through payment to NOAO, as stated in the letter by the director of ON, Dr. Sergio Fontes. As required by FAPESP, we are also attaching to this application a document approved by the highest Board of the PI's institute, describing the system to be used for distribution of observing time, similar to that adopted for all the other telescopes in Brazil and most telescopes worldwide, with the caveat that the robotic telescope will be mainly dedicated to a few long-term projects of high scientific interest to the community, as judged on an on-going basis.
