Polarimetric characterization and forest mapping using COSMO-SkyMed temporal data.


The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of COSMO-SkyMed temporal images at acquisition mode dual (X-band), to map the land cover/land use in the Brazilian Amazon (Humaitá region, AM). The Single Look Complex images (descending mode, spatial resolution of 15m) in HH-VV and HH-HV polarizations (in the first and second imagery acquisition, respectively) will be processed. The thematic classification will be realized based on the MAXVER-ICM and Wishart algorithm, involving pairs components of the co-variance matrix and also, the entropy, anisotropy and angle alpha images derived from the target decomposition by Cloude and Pottier. The accuracy of these classifications will be evaluated using the Kappa statistic. Field survey data, (simultaneous to the radar data acquisition) related to the physiognomic conditions of land use/land cover classes, duly geo-referenced, will be used as training and test samples for the thematic classification and its calibration. The dual COSMO-SkyMed temporal images can be adequate tool to subsidize mapping and monitoring the tropical forest landscape. (AU)
