Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most important vegetables grown in the world. With the intensification of production, the difficulty in cultivating this crop has also increased, mainly due to infestation of the production areas by the pathogen, Bremia lactucae Regel, causing the mildew. Despite the existence of commercial cultivars with the identification of downy mildew resistance, many of these are ineffective in Brazilian conditions. Based on the above, this project aims to: identify of Bremia lactucae races in 2011 in major cities lettuce producers in the São Paulo State and evaluation of commercial lettuce cultivars. In the first stage of the project, will be collected isolates of B. lactucae from lettuce growers different munipalities of São Paulo, in 2011. At the end of the collections, will perform the multiplication of the sporangia insusceptible cultivar Solaris, to obtain sufficient quantities of sporangia for use in the test of differentiation. Obtaining sufficient quantities of sporangia, seeds of 21 differential cultivars of lettuce will be planted separately in gerboxes lined with moistened germitex paper for use in the identification test races. In the second stage of the project will be evaluated lettuce cultivars widely sold in the Sao Paulo State. So it must be sown in seedling boxes, lined with germitex paper, about 40 seeds of each commercial cultivar. Later , these seedlings will be inoculated, a solution of destilled water + sporangia of each race identified by the year 2011, amiming to identify which strains of Bremia lactucae commercial cultivars are resistant.
