Abstract

The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of air flow around an aircraft allows the construction of models that are tested in wind tunnels, an iterative process that is repeated until the lift-to-drag ratio reaches the desired level. To reduce the number of iterations, it is necessary to improve the numerical procedure. The application of a high order finite difference method to solve the system of partial differential equations of Navier and Stokes generates high quality results. For high speed compressible flows, it is necessary to give simultaneous attention to the shock waves (almost discontinuities) and turbulence-generated small scale vortices. The main objective of this project is the development of a high order universal hybrid method capable of accurately capturing the shock waves without eliminating the vortices, and its application in the simulation of flow around objects over a flat plate using parallel programming.
