Abstract
The aim of this research is to study the geotechnical behavior of a tropical soil, considering the unsaturated soil mechanics. Laboratory techniques will be developed and applied to study the influence of suction, as well as investigate collapse mechanism and suction cycles in the stress-strains behavior the a unsaturated tropical soil from Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Analytical methods will be applied through the Barcelona Basic Model (by Alonso et al., 1990), continuing with other elastoplastic models. For this, laboratory results will be obtained by oedometer and triaxial tests with suction control and in situ soil suction data will complete the study. Relationships between laboratory and field parameters will be obtained through the results, complementing other research (Proc. FAPESP: 2007/03451-2). The main aim of this research is not only to interpret the parameters and correlations but also to propose an expedite model and a method to identify collapsible soils. (AU)
