Abstract

The suction has been recognized as an important state variable that commands the mechanical behavior of the unsaturated soils. This research project aims to study the shear strength of an unsaturated tropical soil by using triaxial compression tests with control of the suction. In the study, stress-strain curves and shear strength envelope will be analyzed by varying suction and confining pressure in suction controlled soil tests. Characteristics of soil-water retention supplement the analysis. The results will be modeled, supporting the interpretation of the field tests findings from the SCPT,implemented under the project of research support (Proc.: FAPESP 2011/09031-0) which aims to evaluate the unsaturated soil behavior, through integration of results from different investigation techniques.
