Abstract

In the face of criticism from those still consider sugarcane a monoculture, it´s necessary studies to establish better soil use with crops diversification and considering the economic, social and environmental aspects. This study will evaluate the influence of physical and chemical soil attributes, resulting from different soil uses during the interval between two sugarcane growth periods, on sugarcane yield and longevity. This research project is part of a long term experiment, including the interval between two sugarcane growth periods (from October/2008 to February/2010) and the total period of sugarcane growth (February/2010 until the next sugarcane planting). The experiment has been carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State (21°14'05'' S and 48°17'09'' W). The areas have different soils, eutroferric Red Oxisol (sugarcane production environmental A) and acric Red Oxisol (sugarcane production environmental C). The experimental design is a randomized block with five replications and four treatments, characterized by different soil uses during the interval between two sugarcane growth periods. The uses were the crops of: soybean/millet/soybean, soybean/sun hemp/soybean, soybean/fallow/soybean, and soybean. At this moment (June/2011), sugarcane is developing at 16 months after planting. Thus, this research project will comprise the first and the second sugarcane harvest, when the evaluation of physical and chemical soil attributes and sugarcane production will be done. (AU)
