Scaling relations and photometric properties of galaxy clusters

Abstract

In this project we plan to investigate the physical properties of galaxy clusters first detected in the optical. Our main goal is to precisely establish the scaling relations of galaxy clusters. Our sample comprises systems ranging from groups to rich clusters, enabling us to investigate any systematic present in these scaling relations. In particular, we want to investigate the connection between the total mass and cluster properties observed in the optical and x-ray regimes. A virial analysis will be employed for estimating the mass of low redshift systems (z < 0.2). We will also select all clusters with x-ray temperature available up to z ~ 0.45 and investigate the evolution of the M-TX, M-LX, M-Lopt, LX-TX and Lopt-TX relations. Any deviations from self-similar scaling will be inferred by this study, allowing us to understand the role of no gravitational processes in the formation of galaxy clusters. A second objective of this work is the study of photometric properties of galaxy clusters through the use of their member galaxies. We will focus the investigation in the color-magnitude relation (CM), the luminosity function, the mass-Iuminosity ratio, and any dependence of the results to the dynamical state of clusters. (AU)
