Finite element modeling for development and optimization of bridging plate for reconstruction of segmental mandibular defect in dogs

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a bridging plate to be used in segmental mandible defect in dogs. The plate will made of pure titanium with monocortical screws to avoid damage to dental root and neurovascular structures of mandibular canal. Initially will be done computed tomography (CT) of the Rottweiler, Doberman, Boxer and Poodle mandibles. A software will convert the CT images of the mandibles into a three-dimensional model and it will create a bone defect of predetermined size into the mandibular body. Based on the three-dimensional model with the bone defect will be done identical, precise and detailed physical models for each dog breed using rapid prototyping performed in the CTI (Centro de Tecnologia da Informação Renato Archer). A pre-surgical planning will be done virtually by computational software do develop the bridging plate design. Based on the breeds will be constituted four groups, each one with six mandible prototypes. Each group will be treated with the bone plate initially designed. Flexion tests will be performed in the prototype-plate system to evaluate the relative rigidity and maximum deflexion of the bone plate. The data will be submitted to statistical analysis. The project validation will be done through the use of finite element analysis. This analysis will simulate the mechanical tests to determine if the bridging bone plate design has mechanical resistance to support the bite force of the dog. (AU)
