Renal function markers, vitamin D and functional capacity in elderly

Abstract

Some factors can modify the aging process and cause functional dependence in physical and cognitive domains. The evaluation of the renal function is a challenge in oldest old people that have kidney aging and comorbidities. The kidney disease influences in the functional capacity for acting directly in the cognition and also for other ways including vitamin D. Vitamin D has also action in physical and cognitive capacity in elderly people but we don´t know if it´s associated with the kidney function and can be prevented. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship of the markers of renal function and vitamin D with the functional capacity in oldest old. This project will be a transversal study. 200 aged elderly above of 80 years is going to be studied. Serum creatinine and cystatin C is going to be used to calculate the glomerular filtration rate. We also are going to measure 25-OH-Colecalciferol, FGF-23, PTH and calcium in the serum. The functional capacity is going to be evaluated with the mini-examination of the mental state (MMSE), clock test , verbal fluency, the interview of performance in the basic activities (AVD) and instruments of daily life (AIVD), the grip strength and the timed test of five repetitions of rising from a chair and sitting down.
