Abstract

Traffic accidents (TA) cause around 1.2 million deaths and over 50 million injured every year, worldwide. In Brazil, TA are the second most common cause of death by external causes, generating a cost of over 22 billion reais. In this context, among automotive vehicles, trucks are the second for total accidents, as well as related injuries. According to a recent study, over 10% of truck drivers in roads in the State of Sao Paulo presented a positive result in a toxicological exam aimed to detect recent use of drugs of abuse, a relevant risk factor for the onset of TA. With these data, the present research aims to (a) carry out an epidemiological study on the polydrug use of alcohol and other drugs and (b) evaluate the mental functioning and the performance in cognitive tests and stress, anxiety, depression and sleep disorder scales among truck drivers, to estimate driving behavior under the influence of drugs and interfering factors. A convenience sample of 350 drivers will be interviewed in roads in the State of Sao Paulo. Those who voluntarily choose to participate will also be asked to provide a urine and oral fluid sample for toxicological analyses. The results will serve as subsidies to reinforce or develop new preventive measures, as well as public policies, aiming to reduce TA, as well as related injuries. Furthermore, since this theme is still relatively unexplored in our country, it will strengthen research in our State and contribute to the foundation of the reference center "Alcohol, Drugs, Cognition and Driving", a joint project by Medical School (FMUSP) and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FCF-USP), University of São Paulo.
