Abstract

The reduction of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to stabilize its atmospheric concentration levels can allow continuous utilization of fossil fuels for energy generation. Several schemes, such as geological sequestration, disposal in oceanic deposits, mineral carbonation, and biological fixation, are currently under study to reduce CO2 emissions. Several investigations point out that mineral carbonation possesses a high potential to sequester large quantities of this gas. On the other hand, in Brazil, research in the area is focused in geological sequestration, and this is a technology that requires high costs of manipulation, transport and monitoring after sequestration. The experimental study of CO2 transformation in a thermodynamically and environmentally stable product, such as carbonates, through mineral carbonation processes that evaluate kinetic parameters and extraction processes that could be economically more efficient, is of great importance. Thermodynamic analyses of mineral carbonation processes demonstrate that acid dissolution is the most adequate to consume less energy; therefore, an experimental study of such process will be carried out in this project. The experiments will be conducted according to factors and levels identified for each phase of the project by the use of the orthogonal sets methodology, in order to obtain the best operation conditions.
