Study of carbonation processes applied to the carbon capture technology

Abstract

The laboratory of Combustion and Carbon Capture (LC3) of the Faculty of Engineering of Guaratinguetá (FEG/UNESP) aims to develop research in the energy field, with emphasis on combustion processes and mitigating the impacts caused by the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). Studies in the literature indicate that the carbonation processes have great potential for use in the technology of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Mineral Carbonation (CM), in which applies silicate rocks, such as serpentinite, for the CO2 sequestration through the formation of products thermodynamic and environmentally stable, such as carbonates, it presents as an economically efficient technology. Another CCS technology, in which also involves the carbonation reactions, refers to the Calcium Looping (Ca-U) process. In this process, Ca-based sorbents (usually limestones) are used for CO2 sequestration and this occurs by the reversible reaction between calcium oxide (CaO) and CO2 to produce calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Ca-L process also offers advantages, such as the use of fluidized bed technology; it is a high- temperature process with the possibility of using the heat generated, and low cost of Ca-based sorbents. In this context, this project aims to contribute to the mitigation of anthropogenic emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere and allow the continued use of fossil fuels for power generation. It is proposed the application of empirical techniques in the investigation of CM and Ca-L processes. In addition, an assessment of the life cycle will be performed, based on the energy (ACV) and exergy (AECV). An experimental design technique will be applied to obtain the best-operating conditions in the studied processes. The Model-Free Kinetics will be applied to determine the activation energy for the decomposition of raw materials. (AU)
