Abstract

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.] is becoming an option for producers in different regions of the country for greater tolerance to water stress, short cycle, adaptation to soils of lower fertility and lower production cost. This crop has increasingly widespread especially for growing the second crop in the Midwest and Southeast regions of Brazil and significant increase in export markets such as Europe and the United States. However, information about this crop in São Paulo is scarce. This work aim to evaluate performance of five erect and semi-erect cowpea cultivar on four sowing dates in the period in out-of-season, as well as their performance in different plant populations. Will be conducted two independent experiments repited during two agricultural years. Experiment I is a study of sowing dates and cultivars and Experiment II is a study of plant population. In Experiment I will be the design of randomized blocks in split plots and four replications. The plots will consist of four sowing dates (the second half of February, the first half of March, the second half of March, and first half of April) and the subplots for five cultivars of cowpea (Guariba BRS, BRS Novaera, BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Cauamé, and BRS Itaim). For all cultivars and sowing dates will be used population of 200,000 plants ha-1. In Experiment II, the design will be randomized blocks in factorial scheme 2x5, with four replications. The treatments will consist of a combination of two cultivars (BRS Novaera and BRS Guariba), with five plant populations (100,000, 200,000, 300,000, 400,000, and 500,000 plants ha-1). The experiment will be sown in the first half of March. In both experiments will be conducted the following assessments: a) phenological monitoring of plants, b) aboveground dry matter, c) final plant population, d) number of nodes in the main branch; e) length of main branch, f) number of lateral branches, g) height of first pod, h) length of pods, i) number of pods per plant, j) number of grains per pod, k) mass of 100 grains, l) grain yield, and m) content crude protein in grains. In Experiment II, beyond these variables will also be determined: leaf area, the ratio of leaf area and leaf area index. The data will be submitted to analysis of variance. In Experiment I, the comparison of means between treatments will be performed by Tukey's test (P <0.05). In Experiment II, mean of cultivars will be compared by the Tukey's test (P <0.05), while the effects of plant populations will be evaluated by regression analysis. (AU)
