Taxonomic studies of Mandirola - Goyazia clade (Gloxinieae - Gesneriaceae)

Abstract

The generic boundaries of the tribe Gloxinieae (Gesneroideae - Gesneriaceae) were restructured, based on phylogenetic studies of the last decade. This tribe includes 20 genera and in Brazil, it is represented by 14 species and 8 genera, including Mandirola and Goyazia. These genera are endemic to Brazil and they are usually found in rocky outcrops in cerrado, campo rupestre or gallery forests. These two genera and their species (Mandirola hirsuta, M. ichthyostoma, M. multiflora, M. rupestris, Goyazia petraea, G. rupicola and G. villosa) are not clearly defined in the phylogenetic and taxonomic studies. Some natural hybrids have been detected in Gesneriaceae and gene flow and hybridization can be facilitated in sympatric species with similar floral morphology and phenology. These conditions occur in the Mandirola / Goyazia complex and can be a source of difficulty in these species circumscription. The ISSR and multivariate morphometry analysis have been used to examine patterns of hybridization and hybrid speciation in natural populations as well as cytogenetics has decisively contributed to the determination of phylogenetic hypotheses and to the taxonomy of several plant groups. Thus, this project aims to: a) clarify the taxonomic delimitation of the Mandirola complex, Goyazia species and the relationships between Mandirola and Goyazia; b) understand the processes of speciation and potential hybridizations within and between Mandirola and Goyazia c) know the cytogenetic of Mandirola and Goyazia and find data for the delimitation of species and genera of Gloxinieae. The following data sets will be used in this project: ISSR, cytogenetic data and morphometric analysis. (AU)
