Abstract

Proficiency in management activities undertaken in product development processes (PDP) is regarded as a key competitive advantage for companies, particularly for technology-based firms that have the offering of high-tech products as their main market differential factor. Previous research has identified that the management of product portfolio is one of the main activities that lead product development projects of technology-based companies (TBCs) to be success. However, due to its characteristics perform continuous technological forecasting activities for the development and transfer of technologies to their products through the PDP, this tends to make the portfolio management a complex activity of products for these companies. Through its survey research (quantitative phase) and case studies (qualitative phase), this research aims to understanding the empirical reality of product portfolio management in national companies with technological bases of medium and large size located in the State of Sao Paulo, a region that concentrates a large amount of TBCs. The purpose of this research is to identify key practices known and adopted by these companies, and compare them with already existing published studies and proposals in this area. Results from this project will be disseminated to the academic community through papers and conferences, also. intends to develop a report for the companies research and sector entities. (AU)
