Abstract

Despite the advances in research related to the development of environmentally sustainable products, there is a shortage of studies that demonstrate their relations to product portfolio management. These two areas remain historically separate with rare theoretical-empirical interfaces. This gap can be potentially harmful to advances in organizational sustainability. After all, it is during portfolio management that relevant decisions are made with environmental impacts on new product projects. In this context, this paper, preceded by a systematic literature review of the state of the art on these topics, and based on the adoption of survey procedures (quantitative phase) and case studies (qualitative phase), aims to identify and analyze the relationships among environmental sustainability, product portfolio management and performance at innovative companies that operate in Brazil. After these studies and analyses, a framework is proposed that integrates methods and tools from ecodesign in portfolio management during product pre-development. The results of this project aim to expand the understanding of the relations and the possibilities of integration between environmental sustainability and product portfolio management. The intention is to extend the benefits and gains of ecodesign, going beyond its already established use in development and monitoring after the product launch. It is necessary to apply it in pre-development too, thus contributing to areas of knowledge in the new product development, project management and environmental sustainability. (AU)
