Abstract

The main studies about family environment of schizophrenic patients are those related to the concept of Expressed Emotion (EE), which addresses the quality of social interaction among family members. The EE is considered a good predictor of relapses in schizophrenia. This study aimed to evaluate the criterion-predictive validity of the Family Questionnaire (FQ) for Portuguese language in a sample of family members of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia considering the psychiatric relapse. To develop the study, family members and patients with stabilized schizophrenia in a clinical follow-up at two secondary mental health services in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil will be selected. Data will be collected through interviews with the participants, enrollment of three instruments and analysis of medical records relating to psychiatric relapse in the period from 9 to 18 months after the interview. The obtained data will be typed and processed electronically. The instrument will be validated for predicting relapse when the scores obtained through the family members indicate high EE and the patients have psychiatric relapses in the period from 9 to 18 months. It is expected that the association between EE and psychiatric relapses may provide subsidies for evidence that family environment related to the course of schizophrenia has a significant impact on the planning of family interventions for schizophrenia with a view to comprehensive mental health care.
