Cultural transfers in the press at the turn of the 20th Century - Brazil and France

Abstract

The objective of the project is to map and understand the circulation of some French periodicals of the large scale press at the turn of the 20th Century in Brazil and to realize its implications for the development of the Brazilian journalism. The hypothesis is that this contact with the foreign press would be one of the aspects of the Brazilian press modernization, either through direct contact or triangular exchanges, that is to say, through Portugal. We will use the concept of "cultural transfers" created by Michel Espagne and Michael Werner. We would like to know who are the cultural mediators like booksellers, typographers, journalists, travellers and so on. Which are the effects of these exchanges? Beyond the exchanges of the technological knowledge, we suppose that there is the creation of a common imaginary and a collective memory which are both the result of the intense exchange of the representations in the newspaper. Furthermore, we must ask ourselves which are its imbrications and the results of this « contact zone » when different cultures meet. This project is part of a bigger project, « The transatlantic circulation of printed matter - the globalisation of culture in the 19th Century », which is international and coordinated by Márcia Abreu in Brazil and by Jean-Yves Mollier in France.
