Abstract

Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2) have been appointed as one of the most promising technology for solar energy conversion and environmental applications, mainly because it is an oxide of low cost material, chemically stable and environmentally harmless. Also, TiO2 has a wide gap, but it does not absorb in the visible region. Otherwise, UV light is responsible for the generation of electron-hole pairs, which induce chemical reactions on the surface of the material. In this sense, there is an increasing interest in the applications of TiO2 materials and doping with rare earths may improve its applications for absorption in regions with longer wavelengths. This project deals to the synthesis, morphological, optical properties and electronic structure of TiO2 nanotubes doped with different rare earths (Ce, Pr and Gd). The samples will be synthesized by two methods: a template synthesis and chemical synthesis. Prepared specimens will be studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) associated with the Rietveld method, and morphological studies carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chemical analysis of specimens will be performed by infrared spectroscopy (IRFT) spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission (XPS). For the analysis of the electronic structure and charge transfer processes will be employed techniques of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis. (AU)
