Ecological intensification of eucalyptus plantations by association of nitrogen fixing leguminous tree species

Abstract

A global increase in the demand of wood is observed worldwide that is more and more satisfied by forest plantations (FP) and especially, in Brazil, by eucalypt plantations (EP). But their ability to meet wood demand is limited by competing land uses and their sustainability is a major concern, particularly with regard to serious long-term N and P deficits. Introducing N2-fixing species in FP may increase stand production, as well as N and P availability in the soil. The project will then propose innovative alternatives to pure EP which can provide a high and sustainable level of wood production with reduced chemical fertilizer applications, and positive environmental impacts. The project will develop an experimental approach on mixed-species plantations of Eucalyptus sp. and Acacia mangium in 2 experimental stations (SP and RJ states) and a network of trials established in 4 EP companies (SP and MG states). The project will involve scientists working in ecophysiology, biogeochemistry/soil science, microbiology, silviculture and modelling from Usp, Embrapa and Cirad (France). This study will link cycles of water, carbon and nutrient (N and P) and the ecological processes involved in their regulation, within both pure and mixed-species EP. The biological interactions within and between the components of the system (trees, micro-organisms, soil) will be studied and quantified with respect to the use of natural resources. This project will contribute to the production of refined methodological techniques, documentation of competition/facilitation mechanisms for N and P bioavailability, models coupling water, N and C functioning adapted to mixed-species EP, and will provide ecological intensification - based silviculture, adapted for large areas of EP in Brazil.
