The effect of long-term use of the contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) upon the human vaginal hystology

Abstract

Forty women including 20 current users of the contraceptive with depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) in which five were users for one year, five users for five years, five for 10 years, and five for 15 years, as well as, 20 women never DMPA users(as control group, matched by age ± one year) will be invite to participate. The group of never users will be 20 women, with regular mesntrual cycles, never users of DMPA or other hormonal oral or injectavel contraceptive method in the last 12 months before enter into the study. Women of the study group, will be submitted to a vaginal biopsy during the schedule day of a new injection (90 ± 7 days from the last injection). Similar procedure will be follow with the women from the control group; however, the bipsy must be perform at the middle of the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (days 8-13). The biopsies will be perform with a Shubert van Doren forceps at the vaginal lateral wall, aproximately at 4 cm from the himeneal ring. Beside the biopsy, a blood sample must be collect to evaluate plasma estradiol level (in all the women). The data will be analysed trough Student t test, Wilconson and simples regression. (AU)
