Abstract

The Bladder Cancer (BC) is a potentially lethal disease behavior, with 70% of patients presenting initially with superficial tumor and 30% diagnosed with muscle invasive tumor associated with high risk of death and systemic dissemination. Several prognostic factors exist to assess the risk of recurrence and progression of bladder cancer. The main reported in the literature are based on clinical and pathological data. In recent years nomograms nave been proposed as a method of avoiding arbitrary division of the patients at-risk groups. And alternatively, risk tables are used and show the probability of an event-based prognostic score. However the importance of these and other prognostic factors varies in the literature. Ideally, physicians should be able to calculate the risk of recurrence in the short and long term in patients with superficial BC, based on clinical and pathological data available. So it becomes very important new works that attempt to predict the recurrence of this neoplasm in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the bladder. In an attempt to contribute in this aspect we decided to analyze the importance of prognostic factors for recurrence of superficial BC in Brazilian patients undergoing transurethral resection of bladder, based on data from routine clinical and pathological factors of the disease (number of previous recurrences, grade, CIS associated , stage Ta and T1 lesion number and size).
