Abstract

Host-guest supramolecular systems with Zeolite L can be used in luminescent devices exhibiting several technological applications. In particular, the photoirradiation of organic dyes encapsulated into nanocrystals of Zeolite L can be used to trigger the energy transfer to phthalocyanines functionalized on the outer part of those crystals. Once in the excited state, the phthalocyanine generates the citotoxic singlet oxygen and therefore this hybrid system will be able to photoinactivate pathogens present in, for example, contamined water. The sunlight can be used to excite directly and indirectly the phthalocyanine, resulting in the intensification of the singlet-oxygen generation. The simplicity of this system and the fact that the materials are cheap and the solar energy has zero cost, suggest that it may be used in large scale and it may strongly contribute to maintain the most precious resource of future societies: the potable water.
