Abstract

This project proposes a systematic research of the relations between the artistic dance performance and the audience focusing on presentations of the dance performance Fina Flor Divino Amor (Fine Flower Divine Love). This performance was developed from field research in Umbanda temples, focusing on Pombas Giras entities. The performance stands on the frontiers between dance and theatre, making use of both body language and spoken texts, as well as of character construction. The audience-performance relations are special in this case, since we are dealing with Umbanda, a marginal and stigmatized religion, and this factor shall be considered in this research. This research will be developed in three main directions: the fluxes and contents between audience and artistic performance; the contexts formed in each presentation; and the repercussions of presentation experiences in the artistic performance. These topics will be investigated by presenting the performance to different audiences at different locations. The objective will be to achieve the most global apprehension of each presentation as possible. To this aim, data will be collected from: videos of voluntary testimonials from the audience; written record of each presentation by the performer, by the director and by the performance research team; videos of the performance and, if possible, of the audience during the presentation. It is hoped that this research makes possible the establishment of correlations and connections between the different data collected, the detection of their threads of meaning, and the representation of the receptivity and mobilization of the audience in relation to different aspects of the performance. And thus, it is expected to systematize a knowledge that may foster the research on performance-audience relations in contemporary dance. (AU)
