Plant genome responses to environmental variation: what Orchidaceae have to tell?

Abstract

Vicariant species have disjunctive distributions, causing speciation and endemism. Studies relating genetic structure with geographical distribution in plants is fundamental, allowing understand the habitat fragmentation consequences on the plant species biology and the relationship between environment and genome. However, despite the mega plant biodiversity found in the Neotropics, practically there is no work in that vicariance has been addressed from the standpoint of the chromosome. To minimize this gap, the family Orchidaceae will be used as a model, because it presents species occurring in open vegetation, such as closed, different habits and wide geographical distribution. The observed changes in genomic characters can be related to environmental variations, keeping the rate of recombination in situations that favor the maintenance of a given genotype or changing the recombination rate in conditions of great environmental instability. Under these instability conditions, the retrotransposons may also become more active, re-standardizing the genome and leading to an increase in the amount of DNA, and this variation is considered a major cause of divergence between species. To this end, four subprojects are proposed, where species of Epidendrum, Acianthera and Maxillarineae will be analyzed in terms of chromosome and genome size in a cytogeographic approach, aiming at understanding the genome-environment relationships.
