Abstract

Early traumatic experiences involving not only physical and sexual abuse, but also negligence, emotional abuse, parental separation, losses and environmental disasters, have been considered to be risk factors for the development of poorly adaptive personality traits and for the presence of psychiatric disorders. However, there is a lack of studies involving a reliable evaluation of the presence of a history of traumas and abuse in childhood and adolescence and its association with psychiatric disorders and with the recognition of facial expressions, which may be relevant for the identification of how the abnormal processing of emotions is associated with affective and social symptoms, favoring the planning of diagnostic and intervention procedures. The proposed study intends to contribute to filling this gap, with the following objectives: a) to identify the possible associations between early traumas, psychiatric symptoms, personality traits and the recognition of facial expressions; b) to estimate the prevalence of the occurrence of these traumas in individuals of the general population compared to a clinical sample of individuals with psychiatric disorders; c) to compare the recognition of facial expressions between participants with an experience of early traumas and subjects that do not report this experience; d) to validate for the Brazilian context a self-rating instrument for early traumas of easy and rapid use, and e) to evaluate comparatively different tasks of recognition of facial expressions in an attempt to provide a procedure standardized for the sociocultural and ethnic characteristics of our population, also considering age range, schooling and sex. The sample used will consist of individuals from the general population and of clinical groups previously diagnosed as having psychiatric disorders. (AU)
