Viability assessment of neonatal survival and prognosis in puppies born of cesarean section

Abstract

High neonatal mortality in dogs is reported in both eutocic and distocic birth. The viability assessment of newborn dog and the early detection of fetal contribute to reduction of mortality at birth in the canine species. The clinical findings and the results of laboratory tests at the time of birth reflect the latest physiological events of fetal-neonatal transition, and they permit the identification of newborns need medical intervention. Based on this, changes to these parameters, clinicians and laboratory at birth, as well as in the hours following the delivery can be used to establish the probability of the risk of neonatal death. This project objective: 1) evaluate the viability in neonatal dogs newborns (Apgar score modified hemogasometrc parameters, blood glucose, lactate and body weight) from eutocia (Group 1 - three bitches in eutocia) and caesarean section (Group 2 - seven bitches submitted to caesarean section), and one hour after birth; 2) establish the prognosis of survival of puppy born by Cesarean and eutocia in short-term (up to two hours, up to two hours 12:0 am after delivery; up).
