Abstract

In Brazil, the organ and tissue donation process has been experiencing an increase in the number of donors. There is, however, room for donation rates to growth even further. Today, the main reason for organ loss or inability to actually complete the organ donation process in the case of potential donors has been that, since 2009, families of donors have not granted authorization for organ removal. Considering this, the purpose of this research is to identify the reasons why families have decided not to authorize organ donation when so requested by the Organ Procurement Organization of the Federal University of São Paulo/Escola Paulista de Medicina (OPO/EPM) between 2009 and 2010. During this period, this OPO registered 901 potential donors (709 pmp) of which only 100 became actual donors (i.e.16,5 pmp). Reasons for family refusal to donate will be identified based on a review of the medical charts beginning in 2010. This will be a retrospective cross-sectional exploratory study structured on a semi-experimental design. Data will be collected from interviews conducted with family members that have turned down donation requests to reach a quantifiable result. A committee of experts on organ donation and procurement will review the questions included in the data collection instrument, which in this case will consist of interviews. Data analysis will conducted using the logistic regression model to verify the relationship between the proposed variables and the questions made to donor families about their unwillingness to donate the organs and body tissues of a dead family member.
