Abstract

The present investigation aims at evaluating the effect of precues on postural perturbation (displacement of a support platform) on the control of upright stance in the elderly, in comparison with young counterparts. The project will be conducted in two experiments. In Experiment 1 it will be accessed the effect of precueing on direction and time of occurrence of platform displacement. In Experiment 2 it will be accessed the effect of invalid cues on direction of displacement. In both experiments anticipatory and reactive postural responses will be evaluated through kinematic analysis of angular joint excursion of the hip, knee and ankle; center of pressure of the soles of the feet; and electromyography of anterior and posterior leg muscles. The main hypothesis is that the elderly are more benefited from valid cues and more disturbed from invalid cues in comparison with young individuals, due to increased engagement of attention to postural control in the elderly.
